Opening General Session
Robert Genetski is one the nation’s leading economists. He is a teacher, columnist, and author of 5 books on classical economic principles. His latest book, Rich Nation, Poor Nation: Why Some Nations Prosper While Others Fail, provides over a century of evidence documenting the success and failure of various economic policies. Â
Dr. Genetski uses humor and anecdotes to explain how classical economic principles can help us anticipate where the economy and financial markets are heading.

General Session II: Foundation Forum
Kevin Runbeck, Chairman of the Board, Runbeck Election Services, will provide an update on Vote by Mail.
Scott Hider, President, Clampitt Paper, will discuss the current state of the paper industry as it relates to supply chain here in the United States as well as imports both from Europe and Asia. He will discuss the current supply and demand as well as the potential challenges or headwinds. What is the current climate as it relates to overseas shipments? What are freight costs in the United States and will fuel costs be a burden going forward both in the manufacturing of paper as well as the cost to ship paper locally and internationally? Is there enough manufacturing domestically to meet demand? Where is that manufacturing going? Many topics will cover while trying to make sense of this crazy industry we love.
General Session III: Management
Peter Harrington, Managing Director, Black Line Group LLC, will share why many EMA members qualify for the Employee Retention Credit (ERC). You may think or have been told your company doesn’t qualify for the ERC – fact of the matter is, you likely do. Sadly, there’s a great deal of misinformation about how and why envelope manufacturing companies and their suppliers qualify for the ERC. The session will conclude with a quick overview of the R&D tax credit. This is a must attend event if you have not yet claimed the ERC.
Julian Chung, Managing Director, Kennedy Access Group, will discuss “EB3: Solutions from beyond the local labor pool.” A lesser-known government program called EB3 helps US employers find reliable workers from outside their exhausted labor pool. Julian will share who the program is for and how to implement it.
General Session IV: Technology
Robb Frimming, FTA’s new president, will share how flexographic printing systems have improved over the years. Once thought of as inferior to offset lithographic printing, many flexographic printing organizations are realizing the quality achieved in flexo can now rival offset. High quality process printing along with the addition of special colors and coatings empowers envelope manufacturers to increase the value of the envelope and marketing mail. Rob will also share some of the trends to watch out for in this ever-changing printing landscape.
John Vogel, Independent Printers Worldwide, will discuss why it is time to consider Group Purchasing Organizations (GPO). With shrinking suppliers, consolidation of the market, and the desire to remain independent, GPOs have taken on new growth, especially in the graphic arts market. John will share why envelope manufacturers should examine this avenue for future success.
General Session V: Public Policy
Whit Askew, a respected political and government affairs expert with Washington, DC firm Subject Matter, will share what’s really happening leading up to Election Day, what to expect in the mid-term elections (and beyond), and how to make sense of it all.
Jeffrey Short, Vice President, American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), will provide a trucking industry update, which will provide a look at the newly released 2022 Top Trucking Industry Issues ranking and how these issues may affect shipping costs, availability, and travel time for products. He will also share new research on the viability of electric and alternatively fueled trucks, the driver shortage and operational costs.
General Session VI: Postal
Louis DeJoy, the 75th Postmaster General of the United States – will deliver remarks centered around the Delivering for America plan, a blueprint for putting the Postal Service on a positive trajectory with new opportunities for the mailing and shipping industry. The Postmaster General will update attendees on the progress to dramatically improve on-time delivery, the road to USPS financial sustainability, and the multitude of strategies underway to change and improve the service’s delivery network. This engaging talk will showcase some of the organization’s highlights over the past two years and the upcoming priorities to position the Postal Service well for the important Fall peak mailing season. EMA members will hear first-hand how an integrated mail and package delivery network will enhance service commitments and performance for business mailing customers and, ultimately, the American public. This keynote address will provide you with an understanding of the significant changes that the Postal Service management team is now putting in place – to create a more efficient and high-performing organization to serve the mailing industry.
The EMA Postal Team, Lon Robinson, Director, Research & Development, Tension Corp., Kurt Ruppel, Director Postal Policy & Marketing, IWCO Direct®, and David Robinson, VP, Client Innovation, Pitney Bowes, will give an update on the latest issues affecting the US Postal Service including an update on service standard performance, the most recent postal rate increases, financial results, and other important USPS issues and changes.
